We are currently seeking experienced Heavy Equipment Operators to join our team.
Job Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy machinery including excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, scrapers, rollers, and other equipment to support earthmoving, grading, trenching, and site development activities. This role ensures accurate execution of project plans, strict adherence to safety protocols, and consistent completion of equipment inspections, reports, and basic maintenance. The operator may support oilfield, civil, and general construction projects in a variety of outdoor conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment including, but not limited to, dozers, scrapers, loaders, motor graders, excavators, backhoes, articulated trucks, and water trucks.
- Perform earthmoving, grading, excavation, trenching, backfilling, compaction, and site preparation tasks.
- Follow directions from supervisors, project managers, and foremen to complete assigned work according to project specifications.
- Conduct and document pre-operation inspections, including fluid checks, safety systems, and general equipment condition.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks such as greasing, cleaning, and minor adjustments.
- Operate equipment safely around ground personnel, utilities, and other machinery, using proper communication methods (radio or hand signals).
- Monitor equipment performance and immediately report any malfunctions, hazards, or safety concerns.
- Read and interpret grade stakes, plans, or instructions when required.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and ongoing training.
- Complete daily logs, inspection forms, and necessary paperwork accurately and timely.
- Conduct and document daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections on assigned trucks and equipment.
- Adhere to all company safety policies, site-specific rules, and applicable regulations (OSHA, DOT, operator guidelines).
- Assist with labor or related tasks when equipment operation is not required.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Proven ability to operate heavy equipment safely, efficiently, and with attention to detail.
- Strong situational awareness and commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
- Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and as part of a crew.
- Ability to identify hazards and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
- Knowledge of soil types, grading tolerances, compaction, and general equipment operation principles preferred.
- Ability to work in fast-paced, high-risk environments with changing priorities.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and consistent attendance.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of heavy equipment operating experience preferred; additional experience in oilfield or construction environments is a plus.
Certifications and Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to obtain PEC/SafeLand, First Aid/CPR, H2S, and MSHA, along with any other site specific training requirements.
Work Environment
- Work performed outdoors on construction and oilfield job sites, exposed to varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to dust, mud, noise, vibration, moving machinery, and uneven terrain.
- Travel to remote or rural job sites is required and may occasionally involve overnight stays.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility clothing, gloves, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection is required.
Physical Demands
- Prolonged periods of operating heavy equipment and sitting for extended durations.
- Frequent climbing on and off equipment using steps and handholds.
- Ability to lift, carry, or move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform repetitive hand/foot movements to operate controls.
- Ability to stand, walk, crouch, bend, and navigate uneven ground throughout the workday.
- Ability to tolerate vibration, noise, dust, and outdoor conditions for long periods.
Schedule
- Monday through Friday, typically 10–12-hour shifts, depending on project needs.
- Overtime, night shifts, and weekend work may be required to meet production and maintenance demands.
